Three Decades of
Innovation
Founded in 1996. Employee-owned since 2022. Delivering advanced sensing solutions from Utica, NY to 22 countries.
Our Mission
“Deliver exceptional service through advanced research and engineering, develop proof-of-concept systems, and deploy operational systems to meet client needs.”
Our Story
From two engineering groupsto a global defense leader
Black River was established in 1996 by two engineering groups: one specializing in airborne sensing and weapon systems, another in real-time parallel computing software. This combination enabled the development of multisensor detection and tracking solutions across infrared, hyperspectral, electro-optical, electronic warfare, signals intelligence, and radar applications.
Over three decades, the company evolved beyond traditional sensing. Modern capabilities now incorporate machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data science engineering to detect environmental patterns and adversarial intent. Advanced technologies including graphics cards, software-defined radios, cloud services, and big data analytics have enabled previously impossible solutions.
What started as a handful of engineers has grown to 100+ staff members developing sophisticated operational systems. Today, Black River leads in rapidly fielding advanced sensing solutions — particularly in counter-UAS, signals intelligence, and surveillance radar.

President's Message
It's our people
All of us at Black River pride ourselves on quickly and cost-effectively delivering value to our customers. What makes us different from other engineering firms? First and foremost, it's our people.
Black River staff members possess some of the highest levels of subject-matter expertise in the world, but here it's not about the individual. We hire excellent engineers because they want to be engineers. They enjoy tinkering, fixing, inventing, and solving problems, and they take pride in what they produce. They do this work as a team.
From our investment in infrastructure and research transition techniques to our employee-owned environment, everything we do is focused on integrating exceptional engineering capability into teams that research, develop, transition, produce, field, support, and iterate products to solve real-world problems.
The result is solutions that work. Our staff moves your ideas from the drawing board to the field quickly and efficiently. We're proud of what we do. Let us work with you and show you just how valuable your ideas can become.
Employee Owned
Every employee is a stakeholder
In January 2022, Black River Systems transitioned to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). After one year of eligibility, every employee becomes a stockholder in the company.
This structure aligns the interests of every engineer and team member with the company's long-term mission. When every person building and fielding a system has a direct ownership stake in its success, it changes how problems get solved and how quality gets maintained.
Our Customers
Actively engaged with a wide variety of DoD customers
